Why Is Gut Health Important? An Ayurvedic Perspective

Writer: Kimber JonesKimber Jones
Gut health can be based on clean diet and healthy lifestyle. Ayurveda teaches us how to improve our gut health

Ayurveda teaches that gut health (Agni) is the foundation of overall well-being. When digestion is strong, the body thrives. When it’s weak, toxins (Ama) build up, leading to fatigue, bloating, brain fog, and illness. This topic is near and dear to my heart, because it’s how I discovered Ayurveda. This isn’t the pop culture advice to take some probiotics and do an elimination diet. I got a crippling gastrointestinal diagnosis when I was 21 years old. Ayurveda was the system that not only healed my disease, but also explained why it happened in the first place, and how to prevent it.

Here’s how to keep your gut strong using Ayurvedic wisdom:

What Is Gut Health & Why Does It Matter?

Did you know 80% of your immune system is in your gut? In modern wellness, gut health is linked to  not only digestion & nutrient absorption, but also, metabolism & energy levels, brain function & mental clarity, hormonal balance & mood, and strong immunity.

Western medicine recognizes gut health as critical for overall wellness, but Ayurveda has understood this for over 5,000 years! Modern science is finally catching up with what the ancient wisdom has been teaching for millennia.

According to Ayurveda, your gut is the control center of your health—and when digestion is strong, your body stays in balance.

We say in Ayurveda, you are only as old as your digestion, and you are only as healthy as your digestion- so that’s a lot of power and importance- it’s kind of like the key to the rest of our health. But what we don’t say in Ayurveda is to just take some probiotics, do an intense clean, or just take some digestive enzymes to fix the problem. We focus on long term, sustainable health of the digestive fire instead.

Agni: Your Digestive Fire & The Key to Gut Health

In Ayurveda, gut health is all about Agni (digestive fire, pronounced “ugh-knee”). When your agni is strong, you experience vibrant health. Food is broken down properly, toxins are eliminated, and energy levels are high. When your agni is weak, your digestion is sluggish and incomplete. As a result, toxins build up, leading to bloating, fatigue, brain fog, and disease. How do you know if your agni is weak?

Signs Your Gut Needs Healing

When digestion is weak, Ama (toxins) build up in the gut, leading to imbalance and disease. Common signs of poor gut health include: frequent bloating and gas, fatigue, brain fog & lack of focus, cravings for unhealthy foods, food sensitivities & allergies, and low immunity. So, what to do about it?

5 Ayurvedic Tips for a Healthy Gut

1. Eat Your Biggest Meal at Lunchtime.

Your digestive fire (Agni) is strongest between 10 AM - 2 PM. Eating your largest meal at this time ensures better digestion and absorption. Instead of having a huge meat and potatoes meal at 8:30pm, let lunch be the main affair. Ideally, dinner is earlier and lighter, so you don’t go to bed on a full stomach.

2. Sip Warm Water Throughout the Day Cold drinks weaken digestion and slow metabolism. Imagine poor ice water on your meager digestive fire- no thank you! Ayurveda recommends warm or room-temperature water instead. This will also help you stay way more hydrated! If you feel MORE thirsty at first- that’s a good sign that it’s working!

3. Use Digestive Spices

Spices act as the most accessible medicine cabinet, preventing imbalance. Salt and pepper are American staples, but there are plenty of Ayurvedic spices that help support your digestive fire and make your food easier to break down and assimilate. Try incorporating: turmeric, cumin, mustard seed, black pepper, ginger. If you run hot and tend towards acid reflux or indigestion, coriander, mint, & fennel will serve you well.

4️. Avoid Snacking & Give Your Digestion a Break

Eating too frequently overloads digestion and leads to toxin buildup. Imagine adding 3 or 4 big logs onto the fire of your digestion before it’s even had the chance to burn through the first one. I know, I know, this can be a big ask. Just try limiting your snacking and see how things go. It really can be a game changer. You don’t have to be perfect at it, aim for a solid B-. Wait 4-5 hours between meals before eating again. If you need a snack, opt for fruit instead of low quality carbs.

5️. Eat Mindfully & Avoid Distractions

Mindless eating disrupts digestion, leading to malabsorption. The food we eat is the building blocks of what will become our cells- we want it to be the highest quality. So if we take in the energy of anxiety, impatience, overwhelm, or distraction while we eat, that energy is going into building us, too. Chew food thoroughly before swallowing. Avoid eating while watching TV or scrolling your phone. Take a moment to pray or notice your breath when you sit down to eat.
